Your Own Online Horse Racing Business?

The thing I’m most famous for, though still not especially famous(!), is being the owner and author of various online horse racing businesses. I started out in 2006, with an ebook called Trainer Track Stats (TTS), which was a reference manual of profitable trainer angles at each race course in UK.

Since then – I handed TTS over to my good friend and fellow online horseracing business owner, Gavin Priestley, three years ago – I’ve owned and authored numerous websites and businesses online:

  • plus numerous others in non-betting niches

Over almost five years I’ve had plenty of ups and downs in the online business space, and I’ve learned a ton of things: what works, what doesn’t work, who to work with, who not to, how to optimally promote, and so on.

In fact, in September 2008, two and a half years ago, I literally had to re-start my business from nothing. That was the ‘genesis of Geegeez’ and, in that business year, I turned over more than £150,000!

So I know how to take a non-existent (let’s call it ‘new’) business and get it up and running in short order. Now, before I go on, I want to draw your attention to a couple of things:

Creating a successful online business – in the horse racing and/or betting space, or in any other niche – is NOT an overnight thing. Nor is it a ten minute a day thing. If you still believe that’s possible, I’m afraid you probably need to stick to scratch cards and lottery tickets. Frankly, there is no miracle solution.

It remains possible that you work really hard on your online business and make no money. If you don’t know what you’re doing, or how to leverage things, you’re likely to struggle in anything in life. Online business is no different. In fact, that brings me onto my next point …

Online business is like a business, only it’s online. If you think that sounds stupid, well yes, it probably does. But read the words again. It’s like a business, only it’s online. It requires much of the diligence that an offline business would, but with a few MAJOR advantages:

– Most solely online businesses sell digital products (ebooks and software), so they have no inventory costs. Or mailing costs. Or items lost in transit. Or damaged in transit. Or stolen from warehouses (note, most digital products are stolen and ripped off – try not to sweat it too much, and take steps to ensure that if things are stolen from you, the thief knows where you are if they like what they burgled. They just might pay for your next product!)

– No premises required. Shops, showrooms, warehouses are all very expensive. And that’s just letting them. Then there’s heat and light (commonly known as electric), staff (unless you plan to work every hour you’re open yourself), and so on.

– You are not tied to set hours, unless you choose to be. So you can work when you want, or even if you want. Note that you still have to work! And work hard, if you have any aspirations of success. But you do it at times that suit you, not your boss.

– You get to work anywhere on the planet that has an internet connection. I only have one other word to describe this freedom: bliss.

    Being your own boss is a double edged sword. If you’re hard to motivate, or have little or no interest in either horse racing or statistics (or whatever is the relevant combination of knowledge for your chosen niche), then you’re unlikely to improve your productivity without anybody to check up on you. A mentor or coach is helpful in this regard, but if you’re not motivated by the idea of your own business in the first place, the mentor/coach will not by themselves be able to add the necessary ‘get up and go’ to your work rate.

    You also need to be prepared to find solutions to the inevitable problems that creep up along the way. If you were learning Spanish, would you expect never to have a problem with understanding something? What about if you were training to be a chef? Is there a chance you might burn the brulee, or collapse a souffle along the way? [I cannot speak Spanish, nor cook to save my life – literally – but I hope you catch my drift]. Shit happens, and you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself down, get help, learn the lesson, and move on. If you fall down at the first sign of a problem, this won’t work for you.

      OK, if you’re still reading, AWESOME! You probably have what it takes to succeed online. 🙂

      Frankly, I could have summed those bullets up in two words. Desire and self-belief. OK, that might be three words, but the point is the same. If you want the kind of freedom that comes with running your own show – if you truly want it, rather than just not really liking Monday mornings – and if you believe that with guidance and your own ‘can do’ attitude, it is possible, and that you’re willing to do whatever you can to make it happen, you WILL BE successful.         Excellent solid content. I’ve been trying to make it online for a while, and I keep changing direction which is probably why its not worked for me.

        My question is how long did it take you to make your first sale? And realistically how long would it take me if I was to start again and follow your training?

        Sorry, another thing. are you offering mentoring or just a training programme and then we’re on our own?

        I’ve looked into this sort of thing and the thing that scares me is seo. I don’t know anything about search engines, and it feels like it will take forever to make any progress online. But I’d love you to tell me I’m wrong!

          Really great questions – thanks!

          Fran – SEO isn’t the be all and end all. The way my business is set up, I can get a LOT of visitors to a website very quickly (I’m talking thousands not hundreds), without using SEO. It is useful in the long-term strategy to learn the basics of SEO, but the way I show you has your list being built, and the money coming in, within a month.

          Ed – I can’t say yes or no, based on what you’ve told me. However, clearly you have time on your hands so that’s a good start. If you’re interested in racing and prepared to learn new things (assuming you’re not a black belt in internet marketing already!), then yes, you probably can. 🙂

          Mike – sorry to hear of the changes of direction. I fell between two stools on a few occasions when I started out. It’s tough when you’re not seeing results. Like I said to Fran above, my approach is specifically designed to get results quickly for those that take it and run with it.

          How long before your first sale? A month is perfectly feasible and, the way I show you, sales don’t come in one’s, they come in 50’s and 100’s. I know that sounds like hyperbole but it’s not.

          Finally, I’m offering both training and some mentoring. More details on this to be revealed soon, but first I want to be sure that I understand where people are at now, and what pain points are being suffered, so that everything is covered.

      3. Hi Matt, like most of your stuff, you do tend to overkill a bit.
        What is SEO ?
        I trade racing most days, not a gambler.
        I think diverification into the ever growing markets is interesting, with specialization the key.
        How much will you charge, i cant do big fees. Not even for a solicitor..

          Not sure what you meant about ‘overkill’. I’m merely stating the realities of online business, because there are so many misconceptions on the internet.

          This is business training and it will not be cheap. Why would it be when people have used this exact same training to make £50k with their first try? (And, more importantly, built a list of 6000 loyal subscribers.)

          So, what with overkill and pricing, this perhaps won’t be for you, I’m afraid. (Solicitor is irrelevant in this context: it’s about desire to succeed in a new arena).

        Just read through the responses and some of my questions have already been answered so I wont repeat them. It’s good to hear that you will be offering training and some mentoring.
        You say this won’t be cheap so would there be any sort of guarantee that this works as long as we put the effort in. I have read quite a lot on the subject and I am very eager to get started, but as yet I havent found a course that will guide the complete beginner through the training.

          Yes, there will certainly be a guarantee. It will be conditional, because – in truth – I don’t want to waste my time with people who aren’t prepared to work at their future success, but for those that are, I’m more than confident that they won’t be needing the guarantee (despite it being there).

        It is the unknown costs that bother me.
        You will charge a fee and we can either afford it or not, but it will be a known figure.
        Other things I have looked at tell you how they will show you how to build a list – great, because we do not want to be blogging away just to cyberspace with no-one reading, but then find that what thet are going to show you is based on by advertising, PPC, Adwords or whateve with the list being generated by yet more spend

          Thanks for your question. I appreciate I’ve yet to give you all of the pieces. That’s sort of deliberate, and it helps me to focus on where people’s pain points are.

          Regarding building a list, and indeed the whole online business model, I do not advocate PPC (pay per click, or paid advertising, for those who don’t know), Adwords, or anything of that nature.

          I will be guiding you a different way, and it’s a way that is proven to work many times over, and in all different areas across the internet. I’ll have more for you on this in about a week’s time. Between now and then, I’ve got some product development content for you tomorrow (Wednesday 27th).

          Ultimately, it will come down to the old ‘price and value’ theory. In other words, some people will see the value in the package I’m offering and know it’s a genuinely rare opportunity to change their life.

          Others will see the price of the package I’m offering and feel the price is too high. A third group will see the value and not question it, but it will be too expensive.

          That’s life to some degree, which is why I’m determined to give all the building blocks for people to have a stab at things on their own, plus an accelerated package for those who understand the value and are in a financial position to take advantage of it / me.

          Everyone is in a different personal situation, and has a different view on how credible this is for them. For a lot of people, they won’t doubt my commitment but rather their own. This, like any other business opportunity – or indeed anything worth anything in life – requires commitment.

          Oh yeah, and it’s a heck of a lot of fun once you’re up and running, too! 😀

      7. I’d really be interested in the final pieces to the jigsaw or that final push. I’m trying to launch my own service and feel I’ve put the basics in place. Started my own blog, doing the social media, blogging for someone else and even started my own list but feel I need that final push. I’m interested in the fact you don’t think ppc are worthwhile.
